Modest Monday: Pretty Summer Florals

DSCN3531

A couple of weeks ago, I was digging through my closet for something yellow in celebration of my Sweetie’s birthday, as it’s his favorite, especially on redheads. And I had just worn my one yellow dress to church a couple of weeks before. As we were celebrating on Sunday, this presented a dilemma. I ended up finding a few forgotten dresses. I love that! I decided to wear this pretty floral one in a completely different way to help modernize it, but then found out about a couple of the kids I used to take care of as a nanny were getting baptized (YAY!) at their church, so I wore a different dress that would blend in more. I’m an extrovert, but don’t really like to stand out so much in a new situation. πŸ™‚

And it’s been TOOOOOOO long since my last Modest Monday post!!!

DSCN3529 - Version 2

Soooo, a week later, yesterday, I wore the pretty floral! I belted it so it was shorter and easier to walk and move in, Paired it with my lacy cardi and tan sandals and wore the mock up of the earring my girls wore in our wedding, green heart stone danglers. Of course it was another hot day, so a side braid finished it off.

DSCN3539

So my red hair shows up better. πŸ™‚ And, a certain someone doesn’t always notice things like flipped over collars. πŸ˜‰

Lots of fun compliments! πŸ™‚

Also, because I love his new shirt so much:

Love Is In The Air

DSCN1301

A few weeks ago, Stephanie, the Community Coordinator from Bloom Nation contacted me about writing a post about the different ways we celebrate love, especially on the ordinary days, as opposed to holidays, birthdays, etc. Have you heard of Bloom Nation? I hadn’t. They support local communities by partnering with independent florists and showcase their handcrafted arrangements in their marketplace. What a cool idea!!Β  This is actually a concept I know very well! It’s something I’ve adopted in my own life for quite a few years. You’d be amazed how evenΒ  littleΒ  30 second effort can brighten an otherwise mundane or stressful day.

DSCN2332

When we were dating, and working conflicting hours, the romance seemed lacking and I gently suggested to my Sweetie that he didn’t have to make grand gestures all the time, but a little note here and there would really help us feel more connected while we were both working. Even a short note on a piece of scratch paper would work. It helped that we worked at a Christian Conference Center and could drop off notes easily. And I worked at the Registration Desk which ALWAYS had scratch paper available. AND, Pass It On cards were hugely popular at the time. Ever since then, we leave little notes for each other regularly. Of course there are dry times, but we always pick it up again. I pick up cute Post Its when I see them and they work great for a simple “I Love You” on the bathroom mirror or kitchen counter/cabinet as a surprise in the morning. Or his lunch box. The same with these pretty, already written notes from a notepad I bought a while back. Last weekend our church had a couples dinner and gave us 3×5 cards to write notes on for our sweeties. Several years ago I bought a little valentine mailbox and we started using it to leave little notes or pustichalks (just a little something), a term we learned from our Russian family members. This year we received this adorable mailbox from my husband’s wonderful cousin as the gift box! Perfect for this gingerbread lover. So this is our new giftie mailbox. And bonus, it’s bigger, so we won’t have to leave bigger things next to it instead of inside. πŸ™‚

IMG_1558

Of course, we still love to celebrate the regular stuff, like our anniversary this Sunday! And who doesn’t like getting flowers for holidays, birthdays, anniversaries and just to show you care?! Sometimes we give flowers, and sometimes we do other things for each other. Sometimes we watch a special movie, go to a favorite location, have a special meal, anything that means something to us. For example, for our Irish related anniversary, we might eat Shepherd’s Pie and Soda Bread, watch something Irish related or honeymoon related like Ever After because we watched it on our honeymoon, listen to Irish music, watch or perform Irish dancing, you get the idea. Or watch our wedding video or peruse our wedding album. And enjoy the shamrock plant from our reception that was a table centerpiece. The main thing is, we like celebrating each other and people in general. Relationships are precious and special, so we like to celebrate that in little ways as well as big ways.

DSCN9549

DSCN0723

And I love Irish Belles, usually found at Trader Joe’s these days.

DSCN2846

Because flowers ARE pretty and cheerful!

We apply this same idea when remember those that aren’t with us anymore. By doing an activity that reminds us of them. I drink black cherry Pop Shoppe Pop when I’m thinking about my dad. And I think of him when I have non-chocolate cake, because we were the only two family members, including all relatives, who didn’t choose chocolate for our birthdays. And sports always make me think of him and all of the different games we went to with my brothers, because I didn’t have a sister until I was 9, and she was a baby! My dad and I had a lot in common, including personalities. πŸ™‚

***** All of these months later I’m finally finishing this post after many health struggles, family emergencies, travels and stress! ****

I have a couple of little girls in my life and we like to connect by crafting and drinking tea together. Quality time spent chatting while doing things we love! Quality time is actually one of my Love Languages.Β  I often deliver flowers to one of the girl’s friends/neighbors on May Day that I’ve bought or we’ve made together. She loves it! πŸ™‚

IMG_8080

DSCN4749 - Version 2

When we remember and celebrate our Chelsie we like to look at her photos, say her favorite phrases, listen to her favorite song (Diving In by Steven Curtis Chapman), set up the train, watch Mary Poppins or The Gnome Mobile because she looked like Karen Dotrice, etc.

DSCN1908

All of these probably reveal my love of themes! πŸ™‚

DSCN2410

A few other things we’ve done are kissing and saying I love you when we part, having a date most weeks, texting as a way to check in and stay connected during the day (including fun emojis the other might like πŸ™‚ ) and just trying to be conscious of being considerate to each other. Helping each other out when needed, or anticipating needs are some of the best ways of showing someone you care, in the most important ways.

The BEST way to let someone you love them? Show them you care about their needs, thoughts and lives. Throwing in a card, flowers or a gift are just the icing on the cake. The Lord really wants us most of all, to show we care though our actions! πŸ™‚

How do you show people in your life that you care?

Modest Monday: Football Fan Style

DSCN1352

I’ve never been like everyone else, which led me to much questioning as an adopted child. Although we were all redheads, it was clear that I looked different and had a different personality. It wasn’t until my 4th sister was born when I was 17 1/2 that I felt like someone looked more like me with our round faces and such. Later, I realized my 3rd brother has my personality. He’s 11 years younger.

I’ve always LOVED being feminine, and used to beg my mom, even in first grade, to let me wear dresses instead of pants. I also grew up being taught modesty, just not the reasons for it, except to not distract the boys at school. But no one had to beg me to appreciate my girly-ness. Instead I had to fight hard for it my whole life. And the more years that pass, the more I feel odd for wanting to be feminine, when most are fine dressing far too similar to men. God made me female, why would I want to look like a guy?

One area where it seems almost unforgivable to be feminine is in sports, but I don’t even like wearing t-shirts in my everyday life, so of course I don’t really love wearing them while watching sports. Actually my husband hates me in those sports t-shirts. But I love feeling more connected to my home state, my college and my college friends by watching my alma mater play football while living out of state.

DSCN8448

So first I bought this dress to wear during games with a yellow shirt underneath:

OregonDuckDress

Still sporty, but not so masculine.

But sometimes I need more, so even though I know everyone will think I’m weird, I’m sharing my cute and feminine Oregon Ducks outfit from last Saturday:

DSCN1357

This shirt doesn’t have their name or duck on it, but it’s the right color! And the skirt has both yellow and green in it. BTW: I’m making the Oregon O here. πŸ™‚

DSCN1355

DSCN1349

I like being accepted, but I also like being unique. Sometimes that means I’m the only one I know like me and people think I’m odd. Sometimes I’m okay with that and sometimes I just want to be “normal.” I think we’re all constantly working on being okay with our uniqueness. That’s life! πŸ™‚

DSCN1347

I talk with my hands. And my Sweetie doesn’t always wait until I’m ready when he snaps photos! πŸ™‚

Modest Monday: Denim Dress Revisited

DSCN0496

This week I wore my favorite (read only) denim dress, but paired with different accessories than I have before. I am not a denim lover, but this dress is so soft and is perfectly cut for my body type.

I found this new jewelry on clearance at Kohl’s, because it’s considered 4th of July jewelry. But you can see how it can be worn anytime. And I have a soft spot for flowers!! πŸ™‚

DSCN0496

What do you think of that weird hair coming out of the side of my head? It’s always windy here. πŸ™‚

DSCN0500

I’m also wearing a Cami Secret instead of a tank top or Halftee because it’s too HOT here for ANYTHING extra!! Here’s how I make them work, because they don’t work the way the company sells them.

DSCN0499

The earrings actually came with this necklace:

DSCN0511

But they match both! Yay!!

And then we ended the photo session for a fight. Sigh. That’s real life. Don’t worry, we made up. πŸ™‚

It happens, as we take these after church when we’re either hungry, tired or both. We like Sunday afternoon naps if we’re home.

Have a great week!!

My New Pretty Dishes

DSCN0388

A few years ago I decided I wanted to switch out our retro 70’s dish set with something different. Then a couple of years ago my husband expressed the same thing. Yay! He took photos of a few plates at Daiso while he was out of town, and I spotted a different one in the photos that I liked. Was it porcelain? Were there other pieces so I could create a set? Blank stares…I looked at other locations on other visits and found nothing. As I started looking around, I found I was drawn to modern vintage flowered patterns. But…they were either super expensive or discontinued, and mostly from England and Japan. Can you say expensive PLUS overseas shipping?!!! Ack!! I was feeling pretty hopeless and about to give up and settle with something that wasn’t really my style, when Pioneer Woman came out with her line a couple of weeks ago. A lot of her line is mostly my style, so I thought maybe I could piece together a set from the line. Then…when we were visiting his parents again over the weekend, I asked which Daiso store is the LARGEST..and FINALLY found my new pretty dishes!!!! I ended up choosing a different pattern than the original one I fell in love with, which was more of an English style. I shocked even myself! πŸ™‚

DSCN0372

The best part? Husband approved, which also surprised me. He knows I’ve been discouraged though, so maybe that was part of it?! I picked the green cups with him in mind, and I actually love the combo! πŸ™‚

A Little R & R Wednesdays - a linky party

Modest Monday: LuLaRoe Peach Flowers

DSCN0159

We took photos two weeks in a row! Yay us!! I won’t say we weren’t fighting just before taking these, but then we made each other laugh for the genuine smiles. πŸ™‚

THIS is the gorgeous LuLaRoe I bought last week, my newest piece. At the time I was torn between this and a lace navy one. And I don’t even like navy, but it fit like a dream! This one fit nearly as well, and it’s so pretty and so me! I love it even more a week later than the night I bought it!Β  πŸ™‚

The tree makes it more fun, except that it was covered in ants!

DSCN0165

It was actually too hot for even this little cardigan, but I don’t wear tanks alone, so I suffered through.

DSCN0156

And here’s my pretty jewelry. You can’t see the turquoise in the skirt from these photos, but it’s there. And wouldn’t you know it, I found the missing, matching earrings TODAY! Haha! C’est la vie!

Have a great week everyone!!

And here’s a little more about LuLaRoe.

Modest Monday: LuLaRoe – Turquoise Flowers

DSCN0056_2

Last week I went to a LuLaRoe party. Have you heard of LuLaRoe? It’s a California based clothing company that is gaining popularity, even in other states. It’s like Tupperware in that you go to a party, see and try on clothes and buy what you love. The prices are a little higher than we would normally spend on clothes, but if I find something I love and know I’ll wear a lot, I’ll splurge. Especially in the case of last week, where I know I’m also contributing to the ministries of these ladies. Finding things in my size, and flowered instead of geometric can be tricky, but I have found a few, including this, my first purchase about a year ago. Why am I posting about this one, and not my brand new one, you ask? Because I told a friend who bought one similar to this one that night, that I would wear mine if she wore hers and we could be twinsies! Of course I forgot that we go to two different services. C’est la vie, I needed to blog this one anyway! πŸ™‚

DSCN0055_2

Pretty!! Pretty!! This is a maxi skirt, but I like to wear it high because I’m short. Or sometimes I fold the waist a couple of times. It’s what gives it that fuller look. I constantly get asked what skirt it is, even by the ones with the business. πŸ™‚

DSCN0053

This one is for the oak tree. πŸ™‚

A close up from a different day of my pretty, Etsy necklace. I couldn’t find the matching earrings. 😦

And my pretty ring from a different day.

Have you heard of LuLaRoe? Do you own any pieces? One of the best things about them is that most of the pieces are very MODEST. It can be so difficult when shopping these days, so…PERFECT!!!

Modest Monday: My Favorite (Flowered) Dress

DSCN8543

I shared about this dress before HERE, but it never received it’s proper attention, as it IS my FAVORITE dress!!! I rarely pay full price for things like clothes, but I was too scared to lose out on this pretty dress, so I bought it, then and there! Β  A year and a half later and it’s still my favorite!! πŸ™‚

DSCN8535

The dress was a tad short, so I added a strip of lace along the hem.

I just ADORE flowers!!

DSCN8537

I still love this jewelry from Connor Inspires Amy on ETSY.

We tried a new spot for photos at my in-law’s and I LOVE seeing the GREEN behind me!!

Modest Monday: Green and Cream Daisies

DSCN8471

Happy Monday! It’s the day after Resurrection Day and time for a Modest Monday post, so here’s what I wore yesterday! I bought this gorgeous dress from Kohl’s last summer for my Ellie costume from “Up” for a Pixar themed party. I LOVE it!!!

DSCN8471

Here are the beautiful details of the dress:

DSCN8464

I wore a tank halftee underneath for more coverage and my white cardigan. My friend gave me the “He is Risen” necklace, but it didn’t exactly match, and necklaces looked odd with this beautiful lace neckline. So I took the pendant off of the chain and pinned it onto my cardigan. πŸ™‚

My brand new shamrock ring!!! When we were engaged and looking for my wedding ring, we couldn’t find what I had always dreamed of since high school, a shamrock ring with three emeralds and a diamond in the center. I finally found one at Avon, but it was silver coated. Then I found this one months ago at shopirish.com, but it was sold out. 😦 I figured my chance was over…but then it finally showed up again!!! Yay, sterling silver so I can wear it everyday. I’m super happy! It isn’t exactly what I had imagined, but i”m happy with it! πŸ™‚

Ways to Celebrate Ireland Day

DSCN2903

I’ve written a bunch of posts about the ways we celebrate Ireland. Our anniversary is just a few days earlier, and we both have Irish roots. I also lived there for two years as a missionary, so we like to celebrate the friendliness, beauty, food, music and dance of Ireland’s emerald shores. We sometimes do something more Americanized like lime and 7up punch, but we mostly do things the Irish way. So I’m including the links to all of my previous posts right here, nice and handy!
